La Brocante

Today we participated in our village's flea market (la brocante)! We love to go to flea markets but are usually unable to since they almost always take place on Sundays, and if Frederic is not working on a Sunday we are at church.

Fortunately, our village decided to hold theirs today, Labor Day. Frederic still had to work today but his dad was able to help us out.

After paying for our spot (6 €, it was 2 €/meter of space), we made a grand total today of... 20.50 € (about $28). Not bad for ten hours of work, right? Ha! I don't think we're going to calculate that out, 10 hours of work, and three people. I'd say we're way, way below minimum wage.

But we had great weather and it was nice to be outside, so it's okay. We're just sorry we weren't able to get rid of more of our stuff!

So is this all second-hand stuff? More like a garage sale or flea market? I didn't know that either existed in France! I'm interested in knowing more.

Hi Sandi,
I think it's probably most like a community garage sale. It's a mix of new and second hand things, but more are second hand and some are even antiques - tools and the like. You don't have to be a village resident to participate, though, and some people do brocantes in different places every week! (Let's hope they really enjoy it, or they make more than we did!)

We enjoy visiting them, but are not big buyers - but usually we're unable to go since they are typically held on Sundays. Every now and then they will be on holidays like May 1st (Labor Day).

The "comité des fêtes" of our village also had a stand where they sold merguez, hot dogs, ice cream and drinks.

We think the money raised from the nominal sign-up fee goes to the comité des fêtes to help with other village activities. For a village with only 236 inhabitants, you'd be surprised at the number of organized activities! Outings to Paris, walks in the forest, ping pong tournaments, the list goes on and on!
